An intimate exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne: Matisse and his daughter Marguerite
Everyone knows Henri Matisse, the undisputed master of color and a key figure in modern art. But behind his masterpieces stands a little-known muse: his eldest daughter, Marguerite Duthuit-Matisse. The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris now dedicates an entire exhibition to this unique relationship, blending the personal and the creative in a deeply moving scenography.
Titled "Matisse & Marguerite," this exceptional retrospective offers a new perspective on the painter’s work by highlighting the essential role Marguerite played in his artistic journey. It is one of the year’s must-see cultural events, not to be missed during your next stay in Paris.
A selection of more than 100 works, some never shown before
The exhibition brings together over 110 works, including paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and ceramics. Many come from private international collections in the United States, Switzerland, and Japan, and are being shown in France for the very first time. Others, more personal, had never been revealed to the public.
This rare and precious collection sheds light on the evolving gaze Matisse cast upon his daughter, who quickly became his most faithful muse. Present in his work from childhood through the end of World War II, Marguerite was far more than a subject: she was an emotional mirror, a trusted confidante, a silent accomplice.
The portraits he painted of her over the decades are imbued with striking sincerity, oscillating between tenderness, respect, and fascination. They reflect a lifelong quest: the search for an almost complete identification between painter and model, a symbiosis that Matisse constantly pursued.
The exhibition layout
Organized chronologically, the exhibition also highlights the crucial role Marguerite played in the life and career of the artist and father. A member of the Resistance and passionate about art, she was far more than a model: she was a true intellectual and moral ally.
Visitors will also discover works created by Marguerite herself, as well as touching family archives that reveal the depth of their connection. In addition, masterpieces from major private collections in the United States, Switzerland, and Japan are being presented in France for the first time.
A journey into the private world of Matisse, allowing visitors to rediscover the artist through the eyes and presence of a fascinating woman, long overlooked by history.
